A type of stone coming from Sicily.
Basalt with an uniform color, which varies from black to grey and sometimes tends to aubergine-brown, with possible traces of color. The stone is porous.
It is particularly lasting, solid and resistant to temperature changes (it is antifreeze and heat conductor, it is used in cookings), it can be used for any type of production. It can also be used for kitchen tops, if specifically treated.
Lava stone is widely used to realize public works and sculptures, one of the most representative is located in Catania: the Elephant Fountain (Fontana dell’Elefante), which is the symbol of the city, with the pachyderm made of lava stone and realized by the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini.
